Wisdom and compassion

Psychotherapy and mindfulness

I offer individual and group psychotherapy for adults and adolescents, as well as parent coaching. Therapy is offered in a Boston clinic or as remote (online) therapy. My practice combines knowledge from the world of Western clinical psychology and the world of Buddhism ( mindfulness ), and is suitable for those seeking help with life difficulties, coping with stress, chronic pain, and other emotional challenges .

Does that sound right to you ?

Very nice, my name is Matan Eshad.

Clinical Psychologist (MR 27-155614)

Areas of expertise

Life can bring a variety of challenges and emotional difficulties. Here are some examples of such difficulties, and my thoughts on what can be done to work with them. Relate?

stress

Stress, pressure, distress

Sometimes we can feel as if our lives are simply "too much." Too much noise, too much activity, too much movement. Our daily lives can take more energy and effort than we feel we have the capacity to provide. Often, stress manifests itself in physical signs - chest pressure, stomach aches, fatigue and exhaustion, and especially impatience, towards ourselves and others. Stress can manifest itself in the frequent appearance of a negative emotion, such as anger or helplessness. It can also manifest itself in the form of negative thought patterns, which give rise to thoughts such as "I'm fed up," "I don't have any more strength," "Why am I doing this at all." In these cases, attention to the body and breathing can serve as the key to regulating internal pressures.

Depression

Depression can be deceptive, as its manifestations can be varied and subtle. Sometimes it will manifest itself clearly as a low mood, lack of motivation and suicidal thoughts. Sometimes it can manifest itself in a more physical way, such as a decrease in appetite, libido, difficulty sleeping or the appearance of physical pain. Sometimes, it can manifest itself in a loss of passion for something that once burned in our hearts, and now we are unable to feel a connection to it. Depression is often hidden by a change in behavior, wearing a "mask" that creates a different appearance, or it is denied altogether out of difficulty recognizing it. C. Mental entity and investigation of the reasons for the appearance of depression can help the process of separating from it.

anxiety

anxiety

Anxiety is often expressed in fear and apprehension about bad things that might happen to us. Basically, anxiety is an important mechanism designed to protect us. The problem begins when anxiety becomes dominant and overshadows the rest of our experience. In these cases, we may find ourselves avoiding activities we would like to do just to avoid a possible encounter with the feared factor. Developing a clear understanding and vision of the situation can help us change problematic thinking patterns that intensify anxiety.

Post-trauma

Past traumas may accompany us throughout our lives, and manifest themselves in a variety of forms. Sometimes these are flashbacks, over-arousal, difficulty sleeping, lack of concentration and nightmares. Sometimes they are the appearance of unpleasant and difficult emotions such as depression, guilt and shame. Trauma expresses an unbearable experience, which cannot be contained, and which may lead to a loss of faith in other people and the goodness of the world. Often the most correct and accurate approach to trauma is to create gentle and compassionate contact with the wounds of the past.

interpersonal issues

Interpersonal difficulties

Our difficulties may arise mainly within relationships - between family members, in a relationship, at work or in other contexts. Interpersonal difficulties can manifest themselves in the appearance of strong and unpleasant emotions during interactions with others, which may lead to hurt, distancing and ultimately loneliness. Often, the difficulty stems from the appearance of internal pain that is thrown out, and therefore it is precisely the manifestation of self-compassion that can lead to the development of liberating insights and the change of problematic patterns that appear in interpersonal contexts.

Psychosomatic pain and eating disorders

In some cases, our emotional suffering will manifest itself primarily in physical symptoms - stomach aches, digestive problems, inflammatory diseases, neurological pain (stabbing, burning), muscle pain, paralysis or weakness. Often, only after a long and exhausting medical investigation is undertaken do we realize that the source of these symptoms is emotional. A conscious and attentive exploration of the pain and discomfort, acceptance of its occurrence and development of flexibility around the patterns that accompany it can reduce its frequency and intensity, and develop an understanding of its emotional origin.

Even if it sometimes doesn't seem like it, many times the situation can be significantly improved.

Buddha Close Up

How does mindfulness fit into this?

Buddhist wisdom revolves around two fundamental questions: What is the source of human suffering? What is the way to end it?

Over the years, Buddhist traditions that have included the practice related to these questions, and the Vipassana ("insight") tradition, have placed great emphasis on a meditative practice that most of us know as "mindfulness." The word mindfulness is a common translation of the original concept that according to the tradition is called Sati, or loosely translated as "remembering." The meditative practice allows us to remember, again and again, that our perception of reality and self is dependent and subject to change . The more we internalize this, the more wisdom we will develop. However, the tradition reminds us that wisdom alone is not enough. In order to reduce or eliminate suffering, we must also develop the "qualities of the heart," primarily the quality of compassion . Compassion allows us to come to terms with the insights that wisdom gives rise to, even when they arouse in us discomfort and aversion. Along with compassion, there are other qualities that can support the process of conscious change, such as recognition of goodness, love, joy, and balance.

Within therapy, the Buddhist path is expressed in the way we explore our self-perception, in the ability to stay within the exploration, and in the ability to improve emotional responsiveness. Even if Buddhist concepts or practice are not explicitly addressed, these qualities are present in the therapeutic discourse and permeate it. In my opinion, combining the world of psychotherapy with the Buddhist tradition can contribute greatly to those seeking improvement and development in their mental state.

For anyone interested, recordings are attached.   Short (up to 9 minutes) meditations that I have given in various settings. These recordings can be helpful for those who wish to practice independently at home. You can also look at the articles page to read more of my thoughts on the connection between psychotherapy, mindfulness, and Buddhism. You can also find links there to other recommended sources (currently under development).
